Bursaries and Scholarships

The Royal Canadian Legion Pender Islands Branch 239 along with South Vancouver Island Zone offers two scholarships and two bursaries for which Pender Island residents may apply.

The Sir Percy Lake Scholarship is open to all students entering into their first year program at the University of Victoria or another recognized university on Vancouver Island, starting in the year the scholarship is received. Each year all Legion branches in South Island Zone cooperate in raising and awarding $2,000 to a Grade 12 graduate residing in the South Vancouver Island Zone (which includes Pender Island).  Applications due by 4 pm on June 25th.

The Royal Canadian Legion Pender Island Branch 239 Scholarship awards $1,500.00 annually to be applied to the first year of tuition at a recognized B.C. university, to a Grade 12 graduate residing on Pender Island.  The main criterion is academic achievement.  Applications, together with transcripts of final Grade 12 marks, must be received by Legion Branch 239, no later than 4 pm on August 31st.

The Jake Bachmeier Memorial Bursary awards $1,500 annually to a Pender Island resident intending to attend a BC trade school, technical school, college or university program and subject to financial hardship. Funds are to be applied to first year tuition. In the case of trade school, Grade 12 graduation is not required. Military and/or Legion association is an asset, but not required.  All other things being equal, preference will be given to legion members, their children and grand-children.  Applications must be received by Legion Branch 239, no later than 4 pm on August 31st.

Poppy Campaign Bursary awards up to $1,500 annually to a Pender Island resident intending to attend a BC trade school, technical school, college or university program and subject to financial hardship.  Funds are to be applied to first year tuition in the case of a trade school.  Grade 12 graduation is not required.  Military and/or Legion association is an asset. All other things being equal, preference will be given to Legion members, their children and grand-children.  The bursary will be awarded in the third week of September.  Applications, together with transcripts of marks (where applicable), must be received by Legion Branch 239, no later than 4:00 pm on August 31st .  The actual amount to be awarded in a given year will be announced in the February Pender Post preceding the deadline date.
